When your website starts to receive significant traffic from Google`s foreign sites and you have the capability of serving these international countries, it’s time to implement an international version of your site and develop your international SEO strategy further.

We have already talked about domains, subdomains and subfolders. In addition to these, implementing hreflang tags would be the next logical step, and they can really help a lot. Hreflang tags tell Google which version of the website should be shown in which country. It ensures that the correct language version of the site is shown to the right user in the correct country. Essentially, it is a way to create a better user experience.

The simplest approach is to have language-specific versions. You have one website for all German-speaking people, one website for all English-speaking people and you might have another one for people who speak French.

However, we all understand that German in Germany can differ from German in Switzerland, the same is true for English in the States versus English in the UK, so you’ll most likely end up combining regional and language-specific directories with each other.

For example you can set an hreflang tag that reflects one URL that is available for French in Belgium and another for French in France.

The simplest approach to implementation is to think about another group of HTML tags. You have to connect a set of URLs with each other. For simplicity let’s choose English, German and French. On all of these URLs, you will be adding three lines of the same code to their HTML. , then the hreflang attribute with it’s value being de for Germany, en for English and fr for French respectively. Href is the location of the language versions‘ URL.

Once this is done, Google needs to recrawl all three URLs to see if the tag is actually present. In the interim Google can report errors in Search Console saying that there is a circular reference missing or that something is broken. Don‘t worry about it too much if you work with large-scale sites. It can take a long time before Google figures out that all tags are present on each and every URL.

You should also be aware that it is not just possible to specify hreflang in HTML; it can also be done more globally and at scale. Personally, I would prefer to create a dedicated XML sitemap, not only to feed URLs to Google, but also to have one centralised location and tool that is going to maintain and manage hreflangs on a global scale. It is especially helpful when you deal with large scale sites. If you have 20, 50 or even 100 different pairs of language-region combinations to manage and maintain, it will massively bloat up the source code, slow down the site and will make it really unmanageable. So when the setup is getting more complex, I strongly vote for a XML sitemap. Very often in large organisations this can be maintained more easily as it is one project, one job, fewer stakeholders, etc. – and you do not have to talk to different regions, different teams and different managers of the CMS system. XML sitemaps are a good way to control and manage hreflang setups.

You can also deploy hreflang using x-robots headers. Basically, you can do the same with the header as you would in HTML with your hreflang tags. This could be a feasible solution for PDFs, for example, where you can’t deploy any HTML hreflang.

There is also a special directive called x-default. If you are looking for a catch all fallback solution regarding languages, this could help. Say you are serving Spain and Italy, so you’ve set up two hreflangs for those. Now let’s further assume you have an English site which you’d want everyone else to end up on – so serving English as fallback. In this case, the x-default would be very useful.

What’s the difference between local link building and link building?

Link building is the process of getting contextually relevant websites to link to a page on your website. And local link building is the same thing, but getting links from pages that are both contextually and locally relevant to your website.

While the difference doesn’t sound that big, your approach to finding, qualifying and pitching link prospects will be different from most link building tactics that are usually talked about in a global context.

But the good thing about local SEO is that there won’t be as much competition as you’re competing with local players. The downside, though, is that you may need to get more creative in finding link prospects because there will likely be fewer targets compared to a site doing global SEO.

So, here are some easy local link building tactics.

► Join your local chamber of commerce
► Join niche relevant business associations
► Local resource page link building
► Guest post on local websites
► Get featured on local list posts
► Analyze your competitors’ backlinks

And you’ll learn how to find opportunities and execute these tactics in the video.

International SEO Guide (2022) – How to perform in new markets

This international SEO guide includes all the basic things you need to take into account if you’re going into international SEO.

Often times we don’t consider the potential complexity that comes with going into a new market. New keyword research, new types of user intent, possibly new competitors, and a different want of competing. We need to take all of this into account before we make this big switch.

The URL structure of your website will also determine how efficiently google can understand who you’re trying to target whether that’s a country or a language. Making URL structure mistakes when going into international SEO can mean you might later have to go through migration, and if this isn’t properly done there’s a lot of things that can go wrong here.

Just like in regular SEO, links are the most weighted relevancy signal, but you have to change your focus. Typically in local SEO, you’re working on a much smaller scale. You don’t need thousands or even hundreds of links. Many local businesses have fewer than 20 sites linking to them. So adding a handful of links can make a massive difference.

With local SEO, your focus should be on building links from local businesses and websites. We’re not worried about Domain Authority or Trust Flow, because many times the local sites linking to you are much smaller and have less overall authority.

We don’t even care if the link is followed or nofollowed – in the local algorithm, nofollowed links still carry weight and can make a difference.

Basically, all the things that traditional link builders avoid are the things that you’re going after in local SEO. I like to call them “crappy church links” – that really juicy hyper-local link from a church website that’s absolutely killer for the algorithm… looks exactly like the kind of link that the traditional guys would avoid like the plague. It’s got a DA below 15, it’s a nofollow link, and the site that’s linking is pretty ugly.

It’s much easier to build links for local SEO, again because you’re at a smaller scale. You don’t have to create massive, awesome content pieces and then run huge PR campaigns so people see the content. Usually, you can simply look at what the business is already doing and you’ll have awesome link opportunities.

Relationships are an easy source of local links too – it’s likely that the business has been there for years, forming relationships with other businesses and individuals in the local community. It’s infinitely easier to get a link from someone you know…

Local sponsorships and charity work are another great source of local links – basically, if you’re involved in the local community, it’s incredibly easy to build local links.

Citations are another important off site signal in local SEO. Citations are mentions of your business’ name, address, and phone number (commonly called NAP) on other websites. It’s important to Google that your NAP is exactly the same everywhere it’s listed online.

Citations aren’t as powerful as they used to be – now they’re more of a foundational tactic. It’s important to get them right, but it’s not a hugely important signal that you need to add to month in and month out.

This graphic shows the local search ecosystem for the US, so you can see the relationships between the different citation sources. The 4 major aggregators are at the top, feeding down to the second tier sites, in turn feeding to the third tier sites. Then everything feeds to Google’s local algorithm which looks upstream to check consistency. If you’re doing local SEO in another country, the ecosystem will be different, and probably less complex, but the idea is still the same.

In the next lesson, we’ll talk about local content, and how a localized focus can make a huge difference.

Maximising SEO performance on large websites | International SEO

Bastian Grimm, Director of Organic Search at Peak Ace, talks about what is currently going on with Google and some of the key things to think about when managing SEO for large websites.

Skip to:

(00:31) A big topic at the moment is Google’s mobile-first index and the switchover from desktop to mobile indexing. What do you think are the most important things happening with that at the moment? What are the key things that all businesses should be doing?

(05:55) Google has said that it has started to move some websites over to mobile-first indexing. But does that actually work? The search engine is still producing just one SERP for a certain keyword, but some of the websites might be ranked on mobile-first and others might be ranked on desktop-first. Are the websites that are ranked by mobile-first indexing going to have a ranking advantage?

(07:51) You mentioned that one of the challenges of working on website that has both mobile and desktop versions is that you have to make sure that all of the tags and connections are working properly. For international websites that’s an even bigger deal because they use hreflang in many cases. In your experience, how well is hreflang working? What are the biggest mistakes that websites tend to make with hreflang?

(12:14) You mentioned that having a lot of code can slow down website speeds. Website speed is important and it is only going to get more important with the roll-out of mobile-first indexing. What has changed regarding website speed in the last year or so? What are the most important things to focus on from a website speed point of view?

You May Not Want Google to Rank Your Site in All Countries

You may not want Google to rank your site in all countries. The other day on Reddit, someone asked, “I have just added a new domain property to Google Search Console. I want to specify the country where my website should be visible because it’s an e-commerce website. How do I add targeting country and robots.txt from my new website?” A Google employee named Gary Ellis responded with, “Generally, there’s no need to specify geographic targeting in Search Console. Google can just figure out from all the other signals such as different parts of the url or let’s say even if people are bouncing.” And then Gary went on to say, “You should look at how other companies like Amazon do things from a SEO perspective when it comes to international SEO.”

Google Search Console:

So why am I bringing this up? It’s because International SEO is huge. Did you know that I get over 82% of my traffic to the NP digital website from outside of the United States?

In other words, don’t take the rest of the world for granted because it can help you generate a lot of revenue. But here’s the issue. Translating and transcribing your content for every language you want to target whether you’re e-commerce site or B2C site or a B2B site, is a bad idea. You should only target regions where you want to be helpful. Here’s why. If you expand into other regions just to get traffic but you don’t really offer great products or services or even a great experience within those regions, it’s going to hurt your overall SEO.

How you may ask? No matter how good your website is or your marketing is, or even your bounce rate is people are not going to go back to your site or even click on your listings if they know your products and services aren’t tailored to them. In other words, it’s going to hurt your overall SEO.

So only focus your website, your content, your products, your services on the languages and regions you want to target. And here are some tips when it comes to international SEO.

First, transcribe your content. Don’t just translate it. When you want to go after new regions and languages, you have to adapt your content to what people in that region expect. With culture being different all over the world, you’ll find that translating your content word for word just won’t work. You’ll have to customize it to each region.

Second, you’ll have to use hreflang. Hreflang tells search engines and browsers that pages on your website are countries and languages. If you’re wondering how to use hreflang, this tool by Aleyda Solis will help you. And with this tool, it’ll give you the code that you need to put on your website. That code goes into the head part of your website.

Third, you need to build links within the region you’re targeting. You can hire someone from Upwork who knows marketing and they know your space within that region. They can reach out to your websites, build relationships, beg for links. It works. It’s a numbers game, but it really does work. Or if you want more skill, you want to grow faster, you can hire agency like mine, NP Digital where we are awarded Agency of the Year to reach out and build you links throughout the whole world which we do for hundreds of clients. Without back links, you won’t get much SEO traffic.

Fourth, you need to consider generating PR. PR creates brand queries, which is when someone searches for your company name on Google or your website name. This helps with your rankings and traffic. Just think about Nike. Did you know over 7 million people in the United States are searching for Nike each and every single month on Google? Less than 2 million people on a monthly basis are searching for shoes. Nike has a bigger brand than the term shoes. What does that tell Google? Nike’s powerful, people recognize them and they should rank them higher.
